Preparations are underway for the inaugural Rivers International Marathon, set to take place on May 18, 2024. The event holds particular significance as it coincides with the 57th anniversary of the creation of Rivers State on May 27, 1967, and is being organized in collaboration with Arch Raphael Limited.
The project consultant, Mr Femi Abegunde, highlighted the timeliness of the marathon, aligning with the one-year anniversary of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s leadership in the state. He emphasized Governor Fubara’s commitment to empowering youth and creating a peaceful environment for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which aligns with the marathon’s objectives. The event aims to showcase Rivers State as a hub for social enterprise, entertainment, and commerce.
Abegunde stated, “The Rivers International Marathon not only recognizes the essential role of sports in providing opportunities for youth but also directly promotes the governor’s vision of creating projects that stimulate SME growth. Sports, as a grassroots influencer, impacts all aspects of society.”
In terms of economic potential, Abegunde highlighted the opportunities the marathon would create for youth engagement, business stimulation, and revenue generation. The event is expected to involve various sectors, including traditional media, social media influencers, national and state-level athletics federation members, out-of-home providers, graphic artists, signage experts, food vendors, and marketers.
The marathon is also expected to attract participants from across Africa, with the registration portal opening on February 15, 2024, for both local and international runners. The event aims to not only promote sports and physical fitness but also to contribute to the state’s internally generated revenue and enhance the overall economy.
With preparations in full swing, the Rivers International Marathon promises to be a significant and impactful event, providing opportunities for individuals and businesses while highlighting the state’s commitment to youth empowerment and enterprise development.
