The National Committee for the Rally for Development (CNRD)’s desire to extend the Guinean transition is not to the liking of the Living Forces of Guinea (FVG).
In a statement released this Tuesday, April 2, 2024, the Living Forces of Guinea demand that the authorities of the transition respect the Guinean transition timetable signed in common agreement with ECOWAS. Otherwise, they say they no longer recognize the CNRD.
“The Living Forces of Guinea strongly condemn the decision of the Guinean junta not to organize the presidential election in December 2024 as agreed with ECOWAS in October 2022. The postponement of the end of the transition without any consultation with socio-political actors compromises any serious dialogue with the ruling junta,” they say.
The demands of the Living Forces of Guinea
For the respect of the timetable, the Living Forces of Guinea demand: “The establishment of an independent and consensual EMB (Electoral Management Body) in accordance with the provisions of the ECOWAS and AU Charters; the cleaning up and submission to referendum of the 2010 Constitution; the revision of organic laws including the electoral law and the law on the Constitutional Court; the recruitment of a technical operator and the regular revision of the 2020 electoral register by definitively excluding RAVEC and RGPH from the electoral process; abandonment of fanciful judicial prosecutions against political actors and civil society actors,” highlighted the statement.
According to these key socio-political actors, instead of focusing on creating the necessary conditions for the organization of elections, the CNRD “reinforces the restriction of public freedoms and increases harassment against socio-political leaders and journalists,” denounced the FVG.
Call to mobilization
The FVG call for the formation of a broad patriotic coalition to “demand the correction of the Transition through the implementation of the measures indicated above, the restoration of public freedoms and the return to constitutional order before December 31, 2024. After this deadline, the Living Forces of Guinea will no longer recognize the CNRD,” the statement specifies.
Furthermore, the Living Forces of Guinea invite their supporters and members as well as pro-democracy Guineans to mobilize “to respond, with the greatest determination, to the slogans that they will soon launch, for the defense of our violated rights and freedoms and to demand the organization of inclusive, free, and transparent elections before the end of the year,” launched the FVG.
