April 8, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan is in the midst of its second year of conflict, with devastating consequences that require increased international support, according to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (RCRC).

The conflict in Sudan has led to the displacement of over 8 million people within the country, with tens of thousands killed or wounded. Essential resources such as food, water, and fuel are in short supply, and the healthcare system is under immense strain.

Aida Al-Sayed Abdullah, the Secretary-General of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS), described the situation as a “forgotten crisis unfolding before our eyes” and stressed the urgent need for increased support from the international community to continue providing life-saving aid to those affected.

The SRCS, supported by 4,000 volunteers nationwide, is delivering essential services including first aid and evacuations for the wounded, distribution of food and essential items, psychological support, and reuniting families separated by the conflict.

The broader RCRC Movement, which includes the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), is working alongside the SRCS to support its efforts.

Critical funding is needed to sustain these operations. The IFRC has launched an emergency appeal for 60 million Swiss Francs to assist the SRCS and expand its response. Additionally, a Regional Population Movement appeal seeks 42 million Swiss Francs to aid neighboring countries affected by the refugee crisis stemming from the conflict.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is also urging all parties involved in the conflict to adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians. They highlight the lasting harm caused by attacks on hospitals, schools, and innocent civilians.

Efforts to address the crisis in Sudan require a concerted and sustained international response. The RCRC Movement, through its various components, is committed to providing vital assistance to those affected by the conflict and ensuring that the principles of humanitarianism are upheld in the midst of adversity.
