The Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2034, is expected to be a fierce battle between two prominent candidates – Asuerimen Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Both candidates hail from the Edo Central Senatorial District, the region from which the next governor is expected to emerge.
Senator Monday Okpebholo is a self-made businessman from Udomi, Irrua in Esan Central Local Council. His rise to prominence came from hard work and determination, without the aid of family connections. He is supported by a former Minister of Works, Dr. Mike Onolememen, with the understanding that if he wins the governorship election, Onolememen would be given the senatorial ticket of the APC.
On the other hand, Asuerimen Ighodalo comes from a background of privilege and has worked to further his inherited wealth through diligence and discipline. With a successful career in law and business, Ighodalo brings a wealth of experience to the political arena. He has a strong support base and is known for his articulate personality.
The upcoming election is expected to be a showdown between Okpebholo and Ighodalo, with the other candidates like the Accord Party’s Iyere also expected to make an impact. Iyere, a social entrepreneur and human rights activist, is seen as a promising candidate from the Uromi region in the Edo Central Senatorial District.
While both the PDP and APC candidates have their strengths and weaknesses, the election will likely come down to these two major parties. The involvement of other political parties and candidates, as well as the sentiments of the people in Edo State, will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has displayed the list of governorship candidates for the election, including candidates from 17 political parties. Voters are urged to scrutinize the documents and exercise their right to challenge any false information provided by the candidates.
With the stage set for a heated battle, the Edo State governorship election in 2034 promises to be an eventful and closely contested affair. As the candidates campaign and engage with voters, the political landscape in Edo State is sure to witness significant developments in the lead-up to the election on September 21st.
