Play is a crucial aspect of children’s development as it helps them learn about the world, engage in physical activity, and nurture their social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Guidelines in South Africa, based on international recommendations, emphasize the importance of adequate sleep, physical activity, and limited sedentary time for children from birth.

Children under two years old should engage in tummy time and active play with caregivers, minimizing time spent restrained in devices. Research shows that South African babies often do not meet these guidelines and spend excessive time in restraint or in front of screens. Screen time is not recommended for children under two, with a maximum of one hour per day advised for older children.

Playing aids in children reaching developmental milestones quickly, promotes better social, emotional, and cognitive development, and reduces the risk of obesity, leading to improved health and well-being in adulthood. Play is a free and beneficial activity that caregivers can engage in to support their children’s growth.

Storytelling and reading aloud to children are effective alternatives to screen time, aiding in language development and cognitive skills. Reading to babies from an early age helps them learn new words, grasp the concept of pictures representing objects, and enhances brain development. Story time also promotes quietness and calm, making it an excellent bedtime routine.

Tummy time is essential for babies as it helps them develop motor and cognitive skills, with at least 30 minutes of tummy time recommended daily. Encouraging babies to explore their environment through touch and movement supports their physical and cognitive development.

Dancing, singing, and engaging in playful activities with babies are enjoyable ways to stimulate them and foster their physical and social development. Creating a playful environment where children can explore, imagine, and engage in everyday activities as games promotes their health, happiness, and confidence. Embracing play as a vital aspect of childhood, caregivers can provide children with the greatest gift of learning and growth.
