March 9, 2024 marked a significant visit by Lolwah Alkhater, Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, to Sudan. The purpose of her visit was to draw attention to the prevailing humanitarian crisis in the region and to call for renewed international action to address the suffering of the Sudanese people. Minister Alkhater expressed her concern over the apparent lack of global awareness regarding the challenges faced by the Sudanese population. She emphasized the need for continued support and assistance to alleviate their plight.
During her visit to Port Sudan, Minister Alkhater reiterated Qatar’s commitment to bolstering Sudan’s unity, security, and stability. She unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at providing aid and relief to the affected communities in the region. One of the key initiatives announced was the resumption of the humanitarian airbridge, which would facilitate the delivery of essential supplies such as food, shelter, and ambulances. Additionally, Qatar launched a food basket campaign for Ramadan, with the goal of distributing 50,000 baskets to those in need. The country has also pledged $50 million towards supporting relief efforts in Sudan, which will be managed by both governmental and civil society organizations.
During her meetings in Port Sudan, Minister Alkhater received gratitude from Lt Gen. Ibrahim Jaber, a member of the sovereign Council, for Qatar’s unwavering humanitarian support to Sudan. The Minister also engaged with UN and international representatives, urging them to enhance their response to the crisis and stressing the international community’s responsibility to address the ongoing displacement crisis in Sudan. She called upon donor nations to fulfill their pledges made in May amounting to $1.5 billion, highlighting the urgent need for assistance in light of logistical and security challenges.
In her interactions with various stakeholders, Minister Alkhater underscored the critical importance of regional stability, particularly in Sudan. She emphasized that Sudan’s security is integral to the stability of the Arab region and Africa as a whole. Minister Alkhater urged all parties involved to work towards a peaceful resolution, ensure the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors, and refrain from disrupting food and medical supplies to the affected populations.
The visit by Minister Alkhater served as a stark reminder of the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan and the urgent need for international intervention. It underscored the significant role that Qatar plays in providing support to countries facing crises and reiterated the importance of collective action in addressing humanitarian challenges. As the international community continues to grapple with complex humanitarian crises, the visit by Minister Alkhater highlighted the pressing need for sustained efforts to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable populations around the world.
