Amidst growing criticism over the significant foreign and domestic debt burden of Kaduna State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and prominent stakeholders in the state are calling for an investigation into former Governor Nasir el-Rufai. The PDP is commending Governor Uba Sani for highlighting the massive debt burden left behind by his predecessor and is advocating for the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the former governor and his administration.

Abraham Catoh, the Publicity Secretary of Kaduna PDP, expressed the party’s support for any initiative by the government that would benefit the state. He emphasized the party’s commitment to opposing any actions that fall short of promoting development in Kaduna. The PDP previously raised concerns in 2018 and 2022 about the misuse of public funds, the questionable sale of state-owned properties, and the unjust dismissal of qualified teachers under el-Rufai’s administration. The party feels vindicated by the current developments.

Former Commissioner of Information, Rabiu Bako, and former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, have joined in calling for a thorough investigation into the $350 million loan acquired by el-Rufai’s government. This push for an inquiry follows a town hall meeting organized by Governor Uba Sani where the financial status of Kaduna was discussed, leading to clashes between supporters of the current governor and those of his predecessor.

Bako urged Governor Sani to take necessary steps to recover the World Bank loan obtained by el-Rufai for the state’s development. He also highlighted the need for individuals criticizing Governor Sani to reconsider their stance and understand the powers vested in a sitting governor. Shehu Sani emphasized his earlier warnings about the $350 million loan request, stating that the current state of affairs in Kaduna would have been different if his advice had been heeded. He highlighted the challenges posed by the loan repayment given the fluctuations in the exchange rate since the loan was acquired.

Shehu Sani also criticized Bashir el-Rufai, the former governor’s son, for his disparaging remarks towards Governor Sani, suggesting a lack of proper upbringing. He reiterated the importance of accountability and responsibility in public discourse, especially when addressing critical issues affecting the state.

In conclusion, the calls for an investigation into the past administration’s financial decisions and debt management reflect a growing concern among political stakeholders and citizens in Kaduna. The focus on accountability and transparency in governance is essential for addressing the challenges posed by the state’s debt burden and ensuring sustainable development for the future.
