Community Sports and Educational Development (CSED) Initiative, in collaboration with the Edo State Senior Secondary Schools Education Board (SSEB) and the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), recently completed a training program for secondary school Physical and Health Education teachers, as well as Physical Education practitioners from UNIBEN and College of Education, Igueben. The training took place on January 18 and 19, 2024, at the Media Centre and Indoor Sports hall of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. The focus of the training was on the sport of netball, a game played by over 20 million people worldwide.
The training was facilitated by Netball Africa certified coaches, including Bethel Omigie, Onome Edward Fuludu, Patience Odiri Urhobojevwe, and Edema Fuludu. The participants were given both theoretical and practical instruction in netball. While traditionally designed for girls and women, the sport is gradually becoming more inclusive, with a growing emphasis on encouraging boys to learn and play the game.
Edema Fuludu, the National coordinator of CSED Initiative, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and emphasized the importance of the training in preparing future netball coaches. He expressed gratitude to the Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Yusuf Alli, and the Edo State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, for their support in making the training possible.
Fuludu highlighted the potential benefits of playing netball, including the possibility of scholarships and professional opportunities in countries such as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Additionally, he noted that netball is expected to be included in the Olympic Games in the next eight years. After the training, free netball starter packs, including balls, whistles, training bibs, and rims, were distributed to representatives from the participating educational institutions.
CSED Initiative has been active in promoting netball in Nigeria, with previous training seminars and empowerment programs for Physical Education teachers and practitioners. The organization has trained over 340 individuals in various states and aims to introduce netball to marginalized and hard-to-reach communities in Nigeria.
