On Friday, March 8th, the Vice President of the World Bank for the East and Southern Africa regions presided over a crucial ministerial roundtable on the priority reforms of the Comorian government, in collaboration with the World Bank. Despite the absence of the President, the meeting, co-chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Houmed M’saidie, on behalf of the Head of State, was marked by deep discussions and significant commitments.
In his speech, the government spokesperson highlighted the vital support of the World Bank in key sectors of the Comorian economy. Sectors such as transportation, governance, financial sector, energy, agriculture, health, gender-related activities, and notably water, were particularly emphasized.
Minister of Agriculture, Houmed M’saidie, specifically noted the recent investment of 15 million US dollars by the World Bank to address water distribution issues in Moroni and Chu El-maarouf. Furthermore, he emphasized that the total financial commitment of the World Bank to the Comoros has reached over 385 million US dollars, with various contributions including through the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program.
World Bank Vice President, Victoria Kwakwa, expressed her institution’s continued commitment to the Comoros, highlighting the crucial role of partnership in sustainable development. She underscored the World Bank’s willingness to provide not only financial support but also advice and shared experiences to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.
However, while recognizing the progress made, Victoria Kwakwa emphasized the need for the Comorian government to continue its priority reforms, particularly to improve the impact of public investments and encourage private sector investment. She also highlighted the importance of strengthening basic services and maximizing the potential of key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.
