The President of the Republic appealed to the Cape Verdean community residing in Madrid, the capital of Spain, to embrace the challenge of Cape Verde in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), thus contributing to the promotion of a better society.

José Maria Neves made this call during his speech at a ceremony commemorating Cape Verdean Women’s Day, organized by the Cape Verdean community in Madrid (Spain), expressing pride in the integration of Cape Verdeans in that European country.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mayor of Parla. Here, more than 120 communities from different countries around the world reside, and one of those communities is the Cape Verdean community. I am very happy when there is a strong relationship between the community and local authorities. The best way to help Cape Verde is to be good citizens here in Spain. If you have good integration and fulfill your duties as citizens, you are better positioned to demand your rights,” he stated.

He highlighted the importance of the date, considering that Cape Verdean women play a “crucial role” in the development of their communities, the country, and beyond.

“From Parla, I would like to pay tribute to all Cape Verdean women, and the women here in Palma deserve our tribute. Cape Verdean women carry the weight of the ten islands of Cape Verde on their shoulders, urging them to be even more active,” he emphasized.

He also called on the Cape Verdean community residing in Madrid to embrace the challenge of Cape Verde in the fight against GBV, thus contributing to the promotion of a better society and peace.

“We have had many cases of GBV in Cape Verde, where men and women have not been able to coexist peacefully, and we have recorded many cases of femicide, with many men taking the lives of their wives. We all have to work to have a society of peace, friendship, and brotherhood, which must start with the family,” he declared.

“Cape Verdean women were not born to be assaulted, but to be loved and well-treated, and that’s what we have to do. Therefore, I urge all of you to work towards building a better country without violence,” he concluded.
