Seigha Porbeni, a member of the Technical Committee of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has expressed his confidence that the federation’s President, Tonobok Okowa, is transparent and has nothing to hide when it comes to its financial records. Porbeni, who also serves as Okowa’s Special Adviser (SA) at the Delta Sports Commission, made this statement in response to concerns about the federation’s financial management.
In a letter dated January 31, 2024, and addressed to the Sports Minister, John Enoh, Porbeni highlighted the ongoing disputes within the AFN and raised the issue of misunderstandings among the board members. As the National Head Coach of the AFN and a stakeholder in the federation, Porbeni expressed his desire to address the internal issues affecting the organization.
One of the key issues that have sparked controversy within the AFN is the establishment of a five-man committee to investigate the federation’s finances. The panel’s report raised questions about certain financial transactions, particularly those involving AFN Secretary General, Mrs. Rita Moshindi. However, there were objections to the report, particularly regarding the refund of N40 million that AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, lent to the federation for organizing competitions such as the Golden League.
Porbeni was among those who criticized the panel’s report, describing it as a distraction from the main focus of the AFN’s activities. He emphasized the need for the federation to secure funding for the 2024 season and expressed concern about the impact of internal disputes on athletes and coaches.
In his letter to the Sports Minister, Porbeni proposed the involvement of external auditors to review the report of the internal audit committee and take necessary action. While this suggestion took many athletics followers by surprise, Porbeni explained that his primary goal was to seek a permanent resolution to prevent further distractions and ensure the smooth operation of the federation’s activities.
Speaking to The Guardian, Porbeni reiterated his confidence in Okowa’s transparency and willingness to address any challenges or inquiries about the federation’s financial records. Drawing from his experience as Okowa’s Special Adviser at the Delta Sports Commission, Porbeni expressed his certainty that there was nothing to hide and emphasized the need for lasting peace within the AFN.
In light of the ongoing disputes and controversies surrounding the AFN’s financial management, Porbeni’s proactive approach to addressing the issues demonstrates his commitment to resolving internal conflicts and ensuring the smooth operation of the federation. His advocacy for transparency, accountability, and the involvement of external auditors reflects his dedication to upholding the integrity and credibility of the AFN. By taking a stand for the welfare of athletes and coaches, Porbeni seeks to create a conducive environment for the development and success of athletics in Nigeria.
