Dr. ’Tayo Popoola, an Associate Professor at the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, Akoka, recently shared his insights on the current state of affairs in Nigeria in an interview with ONYEDIKA AGBEDO. He focused on the challenges posed by the recent policies implemented by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies and the floating of the naira. Dr. Popoola, a scholar of political communication, highlighted the need for better communication strategies to address the growing tensions in the country.
According to Dr. Popoola, the tension and outcry in Nigeria can be attributed to the government’s poor communication of these policies. The abrupt announcement of the removal of petrol subsidies during the swearing-in ceremony, without prior consultation or explanation, caused shock and uncertainty among the citizens. The lack of transparency and engagement with the public led to widespread dissatisfaction and confusion. Dr. Popoola emphasized the importance of effective communication in building trust and consensus among the population.
He also addressed the economic challenges facing Nigeria, particularly its overreliance on oil as the main source of revenue. Dr. Popoola stressed the need to diversify the economy and revive the agricultural sector to stimulate growth and reduce dependency on oil. He highlighted the role of agriculture as a key driver of industrialization and emphasized the importance of investing in this sector to boost economic development.
Dr. Popoola acknowledged the government’s efforts to address insecurity in the country but noted that the current economic hardships have exacerbated the situation. The rising crime rates and incidents of violence can be linked to the widespread poverty and joblessness affecting the population. He called for urgent action to alleviate the suffering of the people and create opportunities for economic empowerment.
Regarding the issue of plate numbers in Lagos State, Dr. Popoola criticized the government’s decision to threaten citizens with arrest and vehicle confiscation if they did not replace faded plate numbers. He argued that the responsibility lies with the government to provide valid and durable plate numbers to motorists, rather than punishing them for its own shortcomings. He urged the government to focus on addressing the root causes of the issues instead of imposing burdens on the citizens.
In conclusion, Dr. Popoola emphasized the importance of inclusive and transparent communication in governance to foster trust and cooperation among all stakeholders. He called for a reassessment of the government’s policies and a more consultative approach to decision-making to ensure the welfare and well-being of the Nigerian people. By prioritizing effective communication and engagement, the government can work towards resolving the current challenges and building a more prosperous and sustainable future for the country.
