Uganda has reached an important milestone in the fight against polio. Following an independent assessment, the World Health Organisation has confirmed that transmission of the variant poliovirus detected in the country in 2024 has been interrupted and the outbreak officially closed.
We are one of five African countries – alongside Burundi, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and the Republic of the Congo – to close poliovirus Type 2 outbreaks this year. It is an achievement worth celebrating, and one that reflects the determination of our government, health workers, communities and partners.
