The Uganda Police Force Marine Unit spokesperson, Mr. Anthony Amanya, has announced plans to enhance security measures on boats operating on Lake Victoria in order to safeguard the passengers’ safety. During a press briefing, he emphasized the importance of collaboration with civilian leaders at the various landing sites around the lake to ensure strict adherence to safety guidelines, particularly prohibiting night-time travels on the water.

The briefing followed a tragic boat accident that occurred on Tuesday morning, resulting in the loss of six lives. The incident involved a boat carrying 17 passengers from Bussi Island to the Nakiwogo landing site, which capsized after being hit by turbulent waves at around 5 am. Fortunately, 11 passengers wearing life jackets were rescued by the Special Forces Command marine unit, while efforts are still underway to locate the missing bodies, including that of the boat skipper.

Mr. Amanya stressed the importance of local leaders at the islands and landing sites in ensuring that passengers only travel on licensed boats that are in good condition. He highlighted the need for continued cooperation between the police force and these leaders to improve safety standards and prevent further accidents.

One of the survivors, Ms. Irene Akankwasa, shared her harrowing experience, recounting the moments leading up to the boat capsizing and expressing gratitude for surviving by divine intervention. However, Bussi Sub County Chairperson, Mr. Charles Mukalazi Sekandwa, raised concerns about the delayed response from the Marine Police Unit, suggesting that additional lives could have been saved if they had arrived promptly.

The prevalence of drowning incidents in Uganda’s water bodies was also discussed, with factors such as strong winds and water waves contributing to the high number of fatalities. Several past incidents were highlighted, including a tragic incident in February 2024 where a boat carrying passengers and livestock capsized, resulting in multiple casualties. Similar occurrences in recent years have underscored the need for improved safety measures and enforcement of regulations to prevent future tragedies.

In conclusion, the efforts to strengthen security protocols on Lake Victoria reflect a commitment to ensuring the safety of passengers and preventing avoidable accidents. By working together with local leaders and implementing stringent regulations, the Uganda Police Force Marine Unit aims to enhance safety standards and protect lives on the water. Through continued vigilance and cooperation, tragedies like the recent boat accident can be mitigated, and the waters of Lake Victoria can be navigated with greater peace of mind.
