The Ampersand Mixtape project originated as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Leonard, the former podcast editor of the now defunct New Frame website, creating mixtapes that resembled radio shows. These mixtapes featured a diverse selection of music, both old and new, from various parts of the world, accompanied by engaging and socially conscious stories about the songs and their creators. Initially intended for the New Frame website, the project evolved into a monthly compilation of mixtapes, each with its own unique theme.

Leonard observed that the mixtapes resonated with his audience, offering them solace and a sense of connection during challenging times. His compilation of themes ranged from cities and women’s rights to peace, the environment, Africa, walking, philosophers, movies, and the festive season. The positive reception and popularity of the mixtapes prompted Leonard to seek support for the continuation of the series. He successfully garnered support from the French Institute of South Africa, SACEM, and the Mail & Guardian, where he currently serves as the arts editor.

Illustrated by Anastasya Eliseeva, the eclectic mixtapes feature emotive tracks from artists such as Fela Kuti, Brenda Fassie, Ali Farka Touré, Nina Simone, and others. These mixtapes are available for free listening on the Mixcloud streaming platform, with 83% of the revenue going to rightsholders and channel owners.

Listeners are encouraged to tune in for new episodes of the Ampersand Mixtape, which are released monthly. The mixtapes have not only provided entertainment but have also served as a source of comfort and connection for audiences during difficult times. By combining a diverse array of music with compelling stories, the Ampersand Mixtape project has successfully brought people together through the power of music.
