Patriotic Day and Presidential Election in Senegal on the front pages of Burkinabe newspapers
Ouagadougou, March 26, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – Tuesday’s newspapers report on Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s victory in the Senegalese presidential elections, as well as the celebration of the national days of patriotic engagement and citizen participation.
“National day of patriotic engagement and citizen participation: Message from the head of state,” reads the headline of the state-owned newspaper Sidwaya.
The newspaper reports that the head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, took part yesterday, Monday, at the Koulouba Palace in the hoisting of the colors, marking the official launch of the national days of patriotic engagement and citizen participation.
The journal adds that in his message delivered alongside the hoisting of the colors, the head of state recalled that since November 2023, the government has decided to celebrate these days on March 26 and October 2 of each year for 15 days.
For its part, the private newspaper Le Pays continued that following this flag-raising ceremony, Captain Ibrahim Traoré emphasized that the choice of these two dates was a tribute to the father of the Revolution, Thomas Sankara.
The colleague added that according to the head of state, he hoped that during these days, the commitment of Burkinabe citizens to their country would be at its peak.
From a different perspective, the dean of private newspapers, L’Observateur Paalga, displays on its front page: “Victory of Diomaye Faye in the presidential election: New Senegalese lesson in democracy.”
The newspaper reports that according to the trends of the first round of the presidential election results, Bassirou Diomaye Faye could become the 5th president of Senegal since its independence.
According to the newspaper, based on these trends, the standard-bearer of the presidential majority, Amadou Ba, and 7 other presidential candidates hastened to congratulate Diomaye Faye.
In an interview with Senegalese living in Burkina Faso by L’Observateur Paalga, some believe that this change at the helm of the Senegalese state is imperative and the culmination of a long struggle, while others see it as a non-event.
On the other hand, the country has looked into the reasons that could explain this victory of Diomaye Faye.
For the private newspaper, among other things, it is because Ousmane Sonko opportunistically stepped aside in his favor to fight by proxy, and the political missteps at the end of Macky Sall’s term compromised the chances of his candidate.
The state-owned newspaper Sidwaya adds that once his victory is confirmed by the authorized body and his investiture is ratified, this pan-Africanist who recently emerged from prison will be able to test the power.
