For three weeks in early August, detectives from the State House Health Monitoring Unit (SHHMU) pitched camp at the Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (RRH) to investigate increased cases of poor service delivery following media reports of maternal deaths arising out of medical negligence.

It was the second such visit in a space of two years. In September 2022, the SHMU and police swung into action following an expose by this newspaper and its sister media house, NTV, on syndicated bribery and extortion, where a cartel of medical workers and private clinics sold patients and services….
