Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State is committed to transforming the sports sector as part of his ‘Peoples First’ agenda to drive socio-economic growth and development in the state. This vision was reiterated during a memorial golf kitty held in honour of late Pastor Ekpenyong Okokon Ita at the Calabar Golf Club over the weekend. Governor Otu emphasized the importance of uplifting sports and making it more appealing by implementing necessary structures to enhance the sector’s productivity and profitability for all stakeholders involved.

Represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Mrs Agnes Atsu, Governor Otu addressed the management of the Calabar Golf Club, highlighting his awareness of their expectations. As an honorary member, he acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the privilege of having hole 19 named after him, urging the officers to focus on initiatives that would elevate the club. He emphasized the need to dispel the notion that golf is an elitist sport by initiating grassroots talent hunts to encourage young people to participate in the game.

The Captain of the Calabar Golf Club, Major-General Ahmed M Sabo (rtd), expressed gratitude to the government for their efforts in upgrading infrastructure throughout the state, including sports facilities. He pledged the club’s commitment to setting a benchmark for sports development in Cross River State, with golf serving as a focal point. General Sabo urged Governor Otu to allocate time to address the maintenance of Hole 19, emphasizing the role of golf in fostering camaraderie and social connections.

Furthermore, General Sabo extended appreciation to Nyoki Ita, the sponsor of the memorial golf kitty, for incorporating golf into the activities commemorating his late father’s burial. He announced that Hole 5 had been dedicated in memory of Late Pastor Ita and revealed plans to establish the kitty as an annual competition starting from the following year.

The memorial golf kitty not only paid tribute to a respected individual but also underscored the government’s commitment to advancing sports in Cross River State. Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s dedication to revolutionizing the sports sector aligns with his broader agenda of prioritizing the welfare of the people and driving economic progress through strategic initiatives. By investing in sports infrastructure, promoting inclusivity, and fostering talent development at the grassroots level, the state aims to create a vibrant and sustainable sports culture that benefits both athletes and the community.

In conclusion, Governor Otu’s pledge to revolutionize sports in Cross River State reflects a forward-thinking approach to governance that recognizes the pivotal role of sports in enhancing social cohesion, fostering wellbeing, and driving economic growth. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders like the Calabar Golf Club, the government is poised to elevate the sports sector and create opportunities for all residents to engage in physical activities, pursue athletic excellence, and contribute to the state’s overall development.
