Former Nigerian international, Emmanuel Amuneke, recently commented on the progress of Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, and his potential to reach the level of the late Super Eagles forward, Rashidi Yekini. Yekini holds the record as Nigeria’s top international scorer with 37 goals, a feat that has remained unbeaten for over 20 years. On the other hand, Osimhen is currently the joint-third highest scorer in the history of the Super Eagles, having netted 21 goals alongside Yakubu Aiyegbeni.

In a conversation with UK-based reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana, Amuneke emphasized that Osimhen still has a long way to go in order to reach the heights attained by Yekini. Amuneke expressed his admiration for Yekini, stating, “Yekini is Yekini. I don’t think anybody can look like Yekini,” and highlighted the importance of Osimhen’s continued focus and dedication in order to make progress in his career.

Obayiuwana revealed that Osimhen himself acknowledged Yekini’s influence and impact on Nigerian football, describing him as the most influential and biggest striker the Super Eagles has ever had. Osimhen expressed his admiration for Yekini, stating that the late forward had served as a source of inspiration for him and many other Nigerian footballers.

Osimhen described Yekini as a “pacesetter” and a “goal machine” and acknowledged the immense contributions he had made to Nigerian football. Osimhen also expressed his hope that he would be able to reach the level set by Yekini, highlighting the influence and legacy of the late Super Eagles forward.

Overall, the comments from both Amuneke and Osimhen underline the appreciation and respect for Yekini’s legacy, and Osimhen’s recognition of the impact that Yekini had on his own career. While Osimhen is continuing to make strides in his career, it is evident that he still holds deep admiration for the achievements and influence of the legendary Rashidi Yekini.
