Super Eagles stars, Victor Osimhen and William Troost-Ekong, have been given the all-clear by the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) anti-doping body after undergoing random dope tests during the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. The tests were part of CAF’s efforts to ensure a clean and fair tournament free of illegal substances. Earlier, Moses Simon and Ola Aina also underwent similar tests and were declared free of illegal substances.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s new number one, Stanley Nwabali, may still be available for selection for the quarterfinal match against Palancas Negras of Angola if he passes a late fitness test scheduled for today, according to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Nwabali sustained a ligament injury during the Round of 16 battle with the Indomitable Lions and the team medics are working to determine his availability for the upcoming game against Angola. The NFF expressed hope that he may be available for selection if the late fitness test goes well.
The winner of the quarterfinal game between Nigeria and Angola stands to pocket $2.5 million as prize money, as outlined by CAF. The Super Eagles are guaranteed $800,000 for qualifying for the second round and an additional $1.3 million for their victory over Cameroon in the round of 16. If they defeat Angola, they will receive $2.5 million. Advancing to the final would secure them $4 million, and ultimately winning the championship would earn them $7 million. The Nigeria versus Angola quarterfinal game is set to take place on Friday evening.
The player’s clearance of illegal substances and the potential availability of Stanley Nwabali for the upcoming quarterfinal game against Angola brings a sense of relief and optimism to the Super Eagles camp as they continue their quest for success in the Africa Cup of Nations.
