Opening of the 2nd meeting of the Regional Steering Committee for PICAGL/PRDAIGL in Kinshasa – Africa Links 24

The second meeting of the Regional Steering Committee (CORPIL) for regional agricultural growth projects in the Great Lakes, namely: the Integrated Agricultural Growth Project in the Great Lakes – PICAGL/DR Congo and the Regional Integrated Agricultural Development Project in the Great Lakes (PRDAIGL)/Burundi, was launched in Kinshasa on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

In kicking off these meetings, which will take place over two days, the Minister in charge of Agriculture in the DRC, José Mpanda Kabangu, expressed the immense joy that these meetings could finally take place. “After several postponements, I am happy that not only are we starting this second CORPIL meeting today, but also that we have already signed the long-awaited agreement between our two countries…” he said.

The minister also emphasized to the stakeholders of this meeting the expectations that weigh on them during these two days, especially concrete results on harnessing the complementarities of these two projects to promote regional integration through coordination, information exchange, and capitalization of development actions in the agricultural sector.

Present at this opening day, the Executive Secretary of the CEPGL, Herman Tuyaga, stressed the importance of this cooperation in his speech. “It is more advisable to think further ahead in order to continue strengthening agricultural cooperation between our two countries…” he stated.

The representative of the Minister of Environment, Agriculture, and Livestock of the Republic of Burundi, Niyungeko Emmanuel, also highlighted the main results expected at the end of this second CORPIL meeting. “The main expected results are the validation of the action plan and budget for regional coordination activities, which will provide financial resources to CEPGL to carry out its mission, as well as the approval of the modalities for setting up the knowledge platform within CEPGL to make it effective.”

After these speeches which set the tone for the meeting, the progress report on the activities of PICAGL was presented by its national coordinator, Alfred Kibangula Asoyo, who outlined the various achievements of the Project as well as the obstacles encountered.

His Ugandan counterpart, the national coordinator of PRDAIGL, also presented the progress of activities carried out by his organization.

Please note that this second meeting, which began on Tuesday, will continue until Wednesday. Participants are called to:
– Validate and adopt the action plan and budget for regional coordination activities
– Present and approve the modalities for setting up the Platform.

A press conference led by the Minister of Agriculture of the DRC and the representative of Environment, Agriculture, and Livestock of the Republic of Burundi is expected to conclude these meetings in Kinshasa.
