The Sound Art Residency is an opportunity for artists from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, with no age limit to apply. The jury will prioritize pieces that are related to the museum’s collections, interests, and theme.

In spring of 2024, an international jury will select the winning project, awarding the artist an €8,000 endowment (about $8,700) and financing the production of the sound work. The museum may then present the work to the public and include it in their collections.

During the Sound Art Residency, the museum will fund a work of sound art that could potentially become part of its permanent collection. While the piece may be trans-disciplinary, the main component must be sound, whether it’s music, spoken or sung voices, or ambient sound.

The selected artist may also have access to the museum’s audio and audio-visual archives or collection of musical instruments, if relevant.

The Music Box, located on level R2 of the museum, houses the presentation of musical or audio-visual works, and this is where the works produced as part of the Sound Art Residency are presented. Therefore, the Music Box must be part of the proposed project, either as an installation or as a mediation space.

Although the museum’s spaces can be used for the initial presentation, the piece must be adaptable to other places and spaces. The work will be presented to the museum’s public at the end of the residency, in a manner determined by the artist, such as a performance, discussion, or workshop.

The application deadline for the Sound Art Residency is 18 February 2024. The selected laureate will be announced in May 2024, and the research and creation phase will take place from June 2024 to February 2025. The residency will conclude in mid-March 2025 with the public presentation of the finished piece.

Applicants should submit their applications via email at [email protected] before 18 February. The application must consist of various elements, as detailed on the website.

For more information and to access the application form and its appendices, you can visit the original call on the museum’s website.
