In response to escalating crime rates in Jinja city, the police have taken proactive measures to apprehend suspected criminals who have been terrorizing residents. As of now, at least 87 individuals have been arrested in various suburbs of Jinja city, including Bugembe, Mafubira, Mpumudde, and Walukuba.
The arrested suspects come from diverse backgrounds, with women facing charges of malicious damage and being a public nuisance, twelve men charged with aggravated robbery, and seventeen juveniles charged with house-break-ins, among others. This crackdown on suspected criminals comes in the wake of a recent surge in crimes involving machete-wielding thugs, culminating in the tragic murder of former Mwiri Primary School headmaster, Mr. Alex Isabirye, who succumbed to multiple stab wounds.
The police have been working diligently to identify and apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities, and the recent arrests indicate a step in the right direction. One of the key suspects linked to Mr. Isabirye’s murder is among the 87 individuals who have been taken into custody. Additionally, the police have recovered crucial evidence, including the motorcycle used by the suspects and various weapons such as machetes, iron bars, and hammers.
The community in Jinja city has also been called upon to play a role in combating crime. During the burial of a businesswoman, Jane Namajja, the male councillor for Jinja East Constituency, Mr. Richard Mbazira, highlighted the importance of residents not harboring criminals, even if they are family members. He emphasized that stringent measures need to be implemented to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including undisclosed tactics to confront machete-wielding suspects, especially during the night.
The collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies and the community is crucial in maintaining law and order in Jinja city. It is essential for residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with the authorities to rid the city of criminal elements. The recent arrests serve as a reminder that crime will not be tolerated, and those who engage in illegal activities will face the full force of the law.
As the police continue their efforts to ensure the safety of residents, it is hoped that these arrests will serve as a deterrent to others involved in criminal activities. By working together, the city of Jinja can create a safer environment for all its inhabitants and deter future criminal incidents.
