Defender Kenneth Omeruo has emphasized the Super Eagles’ determination to secure maximum points in the upcoming matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team recently experienced a setback with a loss to Mali in a friendly match, but Omeruo assured that they are focused on bouncing back and performing well in the upcoming games.

The Super Eagles’ squad, after the friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in Marrakech, departed from Morocco with most players returning to their respective bases in Europe. Omeruo, as the on-field captain, expressed the team’s disappointment over the loss to Mali but highlighted their commitment to giving their best in the upcoming qualifiers.

Nigeria is set to face the Bafana Bafanas in Uyo and then the Benin Republic in an away game during the international window of June 3–11. These matches will be crucial for the team in Match Days 3 and 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Omeruo recognized the significance of these games, especially for players who have never participated in a World Cup before, as they see it as a significant opportunity to make a mark on the international stage.

Despite currently occupying the third spot in Group C with two points from two games, Nigeria remains optimistic about their chances in the qualifiers. They are tied with Lesotho and Zimbabwe, while Rwanda leads the group with four points and South Africa closely following with three points. Benin is at the bottom of the table with one point, making every upcoming match crucial for the Super Eagles’ qualification hopes.

The qualifying process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Africa started in November 2023 and is expected to conclude in November 2025. The top finisher in each of the nine groups will directly qualify for the World Cup, with one of the best losers participating in the FIFA Play-off tournament to secure a spot in the competition.

Omeruo’s leadership and the team’s determination to perform well in the upcoming matches highlight their commitment to representing Nigeria at the highest level of international football. With their sights set on securing maximum points and ultimately qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles are focused on giving their all in the remaining qualifiers.
