Kenya: Omanyala explodes to fourth fastest 200m time this year

Sprinters Ferdinand Omanyala and Hesbon Ochieng took center stage at the Nyayo National Stadium during the third leg of Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meeting. Omanyala’s impressive time of 20.46 seconds in the men’s 200 meters first heat made him the show-stopper, ranking as the fourth fastest time in the world this year.

Even though they were kept apart, world 800m champion Mary Moraa and former world 800m champion Halimah Nakaayi also showcased their skills. Moraa easily won the 400m race, while Nakaayi dominated the 800m.

The men’s 200m race, which consisted of 15 heats, featured top sprinters including Mike Mokamba, Samuel Chege, and Dan Kiviasi, among others. Omanyala edged out Chege and Zablon Ekwam to secure the top position. Ekwam also achieved a career-best time in the race.

Ochieng also had an outstanding performance, achieving a personal best time of 10.29 in the 100m race, which is now ranked as the second-best time in the world.

Moraa, the Commonwealth Games 800m champion, effortlessly won the 400m race and expressed her determination to achieve a personal best or national record with a time of sub 51 seconds.

Nakaayi, the 2019 world 800m champion, won her semi-final heat with the fastest time of the day in 2:02.52 and expressed her gratitude to compete in Kenya for the first time.

The event showcased exceptional talent and sets the stage for an exciting season of track and field events.
