Veteran Yoruba actor Olaiya Igwe has publicly apologized to Nigerians for his previous actions in support of President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general elections. The actor went as far as to pray for Tinubu’s victory while naked at the beach, which led to widespread backlash from the public, especially in light of the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians due to President Tinubu’s economic policies.
In a video titled “Apologies to all my fans,” which he shared on his YouTube page, Olaiya Igwe attributed his controversial actions to a divine revelation that he claimed to have received. He stated, “I went naked at the beach to pray for Tinubu based on revelation. I supported him as payback because he is my benefactor.”
Acknowledging the anger and disappointment from Nigerians, Igwe expressed regret for potentially influencing people to vote for Tinubu and admitted his role in the current hardships faced by the country. He said, “You are raining curses on me because you felt my going to the beach influenced you to vote for him. I’m sorry. You see me as one of those who brought this hardship to the country. I accept.”
Furthermore, Igwe addressed the dissatisfaction with President Tinubu’s leadership, stating, “Nigerians are crying. Even those in diaspora are angry with the present situation of the country. I want to talk to our father, Tinubu, that Nigerians’ expectations are not met. There’s a need for you to appoint a monitoring team to ensure your appointees deliver on your plans and promises to citizens.”
It is evident that the actor’s apology comes amidst growing discontent with the current state of the nation. This sentiment was further echoed by a well-known supporter of President Tinubu, musician Kwam 1, who also expressed displeasure with the ongoing hardship experienced by Nigerians.
The apology from Olaiya Igwe reflects a recognition of his past actions and their potential impact on the country. It is a gesture of accountability and an acknowledgment of the prevailing challenges faced by Nigerians. Moving forward, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu and his supporters will address the concerns raised by Igwe and others regarding the economic difficulties and unmet expectations of the Nigerian people.
