Mopti, March 14 (AMAP) The Governor of the Mopti region, Colonel-Major Abass Dembélé, presided over the official launch ceremony on Monday, March 11, 2024 in Mopti, for the provision of livestock feed derived from the processing of 10% of cotton seed granted to breeders in the Mopti region for the 2023 agricultural campaign, observed AMAP.

The event took place at the animal feed production unit of Planète Distribution located in Sévaré, and was attended by several dignitaries including the President of the Regional Council, Abdoulaye Garba Maïga, the First Vice-President of the Chamber of Agriculture, Sort Ibrahim Thiocary, the president of the livestock-meat-milk sector of Mopti, Bara Koita, the regional director of animal products and industry, Hamady Kane Diallo, traditional authorities, and the promoter of Planète Distribution, Ousmane Allaye Cissé.

The Malian livestock, with an estimated population according to the latest statistics of the DNPIA of 10,941,400 cattle, 15,900,500 sheep, over 22 million goats, 549,270 equines, 999,200 donkeys, 1,028,700 chameleons, and 83,200 pigs, which make a huge contribution to the GDP, faces difficulties in accessing quality and quantity livestock feed.

To address this issue, the Transitional President, Colonel Assimi Goita, recommended during the 13th session of the High Council of Agriculture to allocate 10% of cotton seed production for the 2023 campaign for the benefit of livestock feed to address the challenges faced by feed producers and stakeholders in the livestock-meat-milk sectors.

The ceremony of the day materializes the fulfillment of this promise. The regions of Mopti, Bandiagara, and Douentza benefit from this operation with nearly 1,055 tons of livestock feed being produced on-site by Planète Distribution. The quota reserved for the Mopti region is 465 tons, with 55% allocated to the livestock-meat sector (265 tons) and 213 tons for the milk sector.

According to the CEO of Planète Distribution, Ousmane Allaye Cissé, cotton seed is not only livestock feed but also human food because it supports a value chain. He mentioned that transporters, workers at the transformation unit, oil consumers, meat consumers, milk consumers, breeders, and all producers benefit from this initiative.

The president of the livestock-meat-milk sector, Bara Koita, praised the Transitional President, Colonel Assimi Goita, and his government for fulfilling the promise. He urged producers to significantly reduce meat and milk prices and expressed the hope that the 10% quota will be increased in the future to maintain the pace of industrialization and increase the production of quality milk and meat.

The Regional Executive Officer, Colonel-Major Abass Dembélé, emphasized that the objective of this operation is to facilitate access to quality and quantity livestock feed for livestock producers and contribute to maintaining the national livestock potential.

He then urged producers to uphold their commitment and asked all stakeholders to align with the presidential goal of reducing livestock feed costs.

Finally, the Regional Executive Officer invited all stakeholders in the chain to efficiently utilize the production output. The ceremony ended with a guided tour of the animal feed production facilities of Planète Distribution.
