The recent attack in Burundi by rebels opposed to the government has resulted in the deaths of nine people, according to a government official. Government spokesman Jérôme Niyonzima described the attack as “cowardly,” with assailants using rifles to carry out the violence in western Bubanza province on Sunday night. Among the victims were six women and a soldier, with five others sustaining injuries.
The rebel group responsible for the attack is RED-Tabara, whose fighters are based in South Kivu province in eastern Congo. The group claimed responsibility for killing six Burundian soldiers in the assault. Witnesses in the area reported that government troops fled the scene as heavily armed attackers pursued them and opened fire on civilians. This has instilled fear among the residents, with one witness stating that they live in constant fear of being attacked at any time.
RED-Tabara also claimed responsibility for another attack on December 22, in which they stated that 10 security officials were killed. However, Burundi’s government reported that 20 people lost their lives in the incident, most of them civilians. The Burundian authorities have accused Rwanda of supporting RED-Tabara, with government spokesman Niyonzima condemning Rwanda for maintaining, training, and arming the terrorist group.
Due to these allegations, Burundi recently suspended diplomatic relations with Rwanda and closed their border. President Évariste Ndayishimiye has directly accused Rwandan authorities of backing RED-Tabara, leading to the strained relations between the two countries. However, Rwandan officials have denied these accusations, claiming that they are not involved in supporting the rebel group.
The ongoing conflict between Burundi and Rwanda, fueled by the alleged support of rebel groups, has resulted in continued violence and instability in the region. The attacks by RED-Tabara have caused loss of lives and heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries. The situation remains complex and volatile, with no easy resolution in sight.
In conclusion, the recent attacks in Burundi by rebels have claimed the lives of innocent civilians and security officials. The accusations against Rwanda for supporting these rebel groups have further strained relations between the two countries. It is imperative for both parties to address these allegations and work towards a peaceful resolution to prevent further loss of life and instability in the region.
