Timothy Nzioka and Ruth Mwanyumba were the top-performers at the Athletics Kenya Taita-Taveta County Cross Country Championships held at Dawson Mwanyumba Stadium in Wundanyi on Saturday.
Despite winning last year’s men’s Under-20 8km race, Nzioka, 19, decided to compete in the senior category and emerged as the champion with a time of 32:24.65. He attributed his participation in the senior event to his preparation for the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Gold Tour scheduled for February 3 in Lobo Village, Eldoret.
Upon winning the senior women’s 10km race in 42:32.69, Mwanyumba, 20, expressed her surprise at the victory, especially since she had only trained for one day. She expressed her determination to train harder for the regional title in Malindi on February 10.
Margaret Wambugha, 17, from Taita, set a new record in the Under-20 women’s category with a time of 26 minutes and 6.0 seconds. Additionally, Ernest Musembi of Taveta emerged as the Under-20 men’s 8km champion with a time of 27:40:02.
Some of the other top performers from the championships included Cecilia Mambo, Rachel Mumbua, Jackline Wamona, and Ansilla Makio on the women’s side, and Joseph Musyoki, David Mutinda, and Samuel Kimbio on the men’s side.
Overall, the championships showcased impressive talent and the determination of young athletes in Taita-Taveta County. The event provided a platform for these athletes to test their skills and test themselves for future competitions.
