Nze Chidi Duru is the Deputy National Organising Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC). He recently spoke in an interview about the public perception of the Tinubu Presidency and the challenges facing the APC in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

He refuted the notion that President Tinubu may become a dictator, stating that the Nigerian constitution does not support such behavior. He highlighted President Tinubu’s commitment to consensus-building, engaging with superior ideas, and listening to criticism. Duru emphasized that the President is focused on leaving a positive legacy by bringing prosperity to Nigeria, creating an enabling environment for businesses, and elevating Nigeria’s global position.

Addressing concerns about the National Assembly perceived as being on a presidential errand, Duru defended their role in supporting the executive to fulfill its mandate. He emphasized that the President must be efficient in utilizing the tools provided to him by the National Assembly to deliver on his campaign promises.

Reflecting on President Tinubu’s governance style during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, Duru acknowledged the importance of periodic review in setting and achieving government agenda. He noted that the federal government has already initiated ministerial retreats and introduced measurable deliverables for ministries, promoting accountability and efficiency.

Regarding the perception of the APC in the Southeast, Duru highlighted the party’s progress in gaining ground in the region compared to the opposition. He noted a shift in support towards the APC and emphasized efforts to engage with critical stakeholders in the Southeast to address historical grievances and foster inclusivity within the party.

Duru addressed concerns about political interests among key figures in the Southeast, such as Governor Hope Uzodimma and Minister of Works, David Umahi, eyeing the presidency. He emphasized the need for unity within the party and respect for leadership to maximize the party’s electoral chances in the region.

In response to questions about project implementation in the Southeast, Duru highlighted the appointment of a Southeasterner as Minister of Works, signaling the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in the region. He emphasized the importance of equitable distribution of projects across Nigeria and reassured APC supporters in the Southeast of the government’s focus on delivering tangible benefits to the region.

Overall, Duru’s interview underscores the APC’s efforts to address challenges in the Southeast, promote inclusivity, and deliver on its promises to the Nigerian people. He emphasized the importance of engagement, accountability, and unity within the party to foster development and progress in the region.
