Rukia Nusra, the national 100m hurdles champion from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), has broken her own 100m hurdles national record. At the third Athletics Kenya Track and Field Meeting at the Nyayo National Stadium, she won her final in 13.70 seconds, beating her previous record by 0.17 seconds.
This isn’t the first time Rukia has set a national record. Last year, she captured her maiden national title with a time of 13.87 seconds, beating the previous time of 13.99 seconds held by Priscilla Tabunda.
Rukia attributed her success to her good starts and finishing, which helped her improve her time. She expressed her excitement at breaking the national record again and believes she can continue to improve.
Rukia’s personal target is now 13.20 seconds, which would qualify her for the African Games scheduled for March 8 to 23 in Accra, Ghana, as well as secure her a race in Europe. She sees this as a stepping stone towards qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games through world ranking.
During the competition, Rukia faced stiff competition from Veronica Chebet, a heptathlon athlete who finished second and improved her personal best to 14.61 from 14.84. Gladys Ngure settled for third place with a time of 14.70 seconds.
Rukia credits her inspiration to multi-track world champion and record holder, Faith Kipyegon. She is determined to continue pushing herself to achieve even greater success and aims to qualify for prestigious international events through her exceptional performance and dedication to her sport.
