The Judiciary has announced that on Monday, there will be no court hearings at all courts in and around Kampala. This includes the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal, the seven divisions of the High Court, and the magistrates courts. The closure is to allow the justices and judges to attend the first-ever national open court day at Kololo Independence Grounds.

The statement, signed by Chief Registrar Sarah Langa Siu, states that the national court open day will take place on Monday, 15th April 2024, starting at 8 am. All judicial officers from the mentioned courts will be attending the event. Despite this closure, the registries of the affected courts will remain open to assist litigants with any other needs besides case hearings.

The purpose of the national court open day is for court users to provide feedback to the judicial officers on the administration of justice. Mr. James Ereemye Mawanda encouraged court users to participate by asking questions and raising complaints against judicial officers. He emphasized the importance of bringing supporting documents to substantiate any complaints made.

Ereemye highlighted the significance of the event in demystifying the court processes and services offered by the Judiciary. He mentioned that the feedback mechanism also serves as an anti-corruption intervention, providing a platform for court users to seek clarity, ask questions, and make suggestions for improved performance.

The Judiciary aims to showcase the services it offers, highlight performance improvement mechanisms, receive feedback from the public, and educate on court processes during the national court open day. Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo will be the chief guest at the event.

The event presents an opportunity for the public to interact informally with judicial officers outside the typical court setting. Court open days are interactive engagements where the public can provide feedback to judicial officers.

Overall, the Judiciary’s goal for the national court open day is to enhance transparency, improve performance, and ensure that court users understand and have confidence in the justice system. It is a chance for the public to engage with the Judiciary, provide feedback, and contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance the delivery of justice in Uganda.
