The 19th edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) kicked off with defending champions, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), securing a 1-0 victory over Petroleum Training Institute (PTI). The game took place at the football pitch in the SHELL Residential Area in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, attracting a large crowd of industry workers and football enthusiasts.

In the second match of the opening day, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulation Commission (NUPRC) played a goalless draw against Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). TotalEnergies emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over SEPLAT in the third game, placing them at the top of Group 3.
The tournament will continue with TotalEnergies facing NLNG in the early morning fixture, followed by PTI and Shell in the second match of the day. ARADEL will compete against NCDMB in a Group 4 match, while CHEVRON and NMDPRA will face off in the last game of Matchday 2.

Reflecting on their draw against NMDPRA, NUPRC Captain Kenneth Gbuhu expressed disappointment at not securing a win but remained optimistic about their upcoming game against Chevron. He emphasized the team’s determination to secure victory in the next match.

Representing the NNPC management, Aishatu Abba Kyari praised the organizing committee for their flawless execution of the event. First Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Chido Okoli, explained the decision to hold the preliminaries in Rivers State and the final in Abuja. He highlighted the importance of allowing participating teams to experience different locations, moving away from the traditional venue in Lagos to showcase Port Harcourt as the oil city of Nigeria, with its top-notch facilities.

The NOGIG promises to be a thrilling competition as teams battle it out for the championship title. With the defending champions NNPC starting their campaign on a winning note, other teams will be looking to dethrone them and secure victory. The enthusiasm and support from industry workers and football enthusiasts create an exciting atmosphere for the tournament.

As the games progress, each team will strive to showcase their skills and tactics to outplay their opponents. With a mix of experienced players and emerging talents, the competition is set to be fierce and unpredictable. The commitment and determination of the teams promise an exhilarating tournament filled with exciting matches and memorable moments for both players and spectators alike.
