Nigeria LNG Limited recently completed another installment of its #NLNGChangeYourStory workshops, which are designed to empower women journalists with advanced digital communication and social media skills for reporting on gender-based issues. The workshop took place from January 30 to February 1 in Lagos and was attended by female journalists from various editorial sections and members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). Sponsored by NLNG, the workshop focused on mobile and multimedia journalism, providing participants with a comprehensive learning experience.
During the event, NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, underscored the organization’s commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusiveness, both within and outside the company. He emphasized the vital role of women journalists in shaping narratives and influencing public opinion for the betterment of Nigeria.
“Our dedication to capacity building stems from the belief in the immense potential of women journalists. Recognizing their pivotal role in shaping narratives, influencing public opinion, and contributing to sustainable development goals, we empower them with essential skills to reshape their stories and, consequently, mold the stories of our nation,” said Odeh.
He further highlighted the workshop’s significance in empowering women journalists with essential skills in the dynamic landscape of digital communication and social media. Odeh stressed that the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop, launched in 2015, signifies NLNG’s vision of embracing new technologies and platforms to articulate narratives that resonate in the fast-paced digital age.
The ‘Gender Active’ workshop aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the digital realm and effectively report on gender-based issues. With a focus on cutting-edge digital communication and social media skills, the workshop provided women journalists with the resources to enrich their storytelling capabilities and engage with audiences in new and innovative ways.
The event featured sessions led by industry experts in digital communication and social media, offering practical guidance and hands-on experience to the participants. Through interactive workshops and discussions, the attendees were able to enhance their understanding of the digital landscape and gain insights into leveraging multimedia journalism for impactful and effective storytelling.
In addition to fostering skill development, the workshop also served as a platform for networking and collaboration among women journalists. Participants had the opportunity to connect with peers from diverse editorial backgrounds and exchange ideas, experiences, and best practices in reporting on gender-related issues. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of community and solidarity among the attendees, empowering them to support one another in their journalistic endeavors.
The #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop series continues to be a testament to NLNG’s commitment to empowering women journalists and promoting gender equality in the media industry. By providing women with the necessary skills and resources to excel in the digital age, NLNG is contributing to the advancement of gender equality and the amplification of women’s voices in the media landscape.
Moving forward, NLNG remains dedicated to supporting women journalists in their professional development and empowering them to create meaningful and impactful storytelling that drives positive change in Nigeria and beyond. As the industry continues to evolve in the digital era, NLNG’s investment in the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshops reaffirms its commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive media environment that empowers women to tell their own stories and shape the narratives of the nation.
