The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Nigeria has set an ambitious target of enrolling between 20 million and 25 million new National Identification Numbers (NINs) by the end of 2024. This target is part of the commission’s five-point agenda to increase the number of individuals registered in the national identity database.

The NIN is a unique number that is assigned to every Nigerian citizen and legal resident as a way to verify their identity and establish their eligibility for government services and benefits. The NIMC is responsible for managing the issuance and registration of NINs, as well as maintaining the national identity database.

In recent years, there has been a renewed focus on increasing the number of individuals enrolled in the national identity database in Nigeria. This is due to the increasing importance of the NIN as a means of identification for various government services and initiatives, as well as the need to ensure the security and integrity of the national identity database.

To achieve its target of enrolling between 20 million and 25 million new NINs by the end of 2024, the NIMC has outlined a five-point agenda that will guide its efforts. These points include:

1. Expansion of Enrollment Centers: The NIMC plans to expand its network of enrollment centers across the country to make it easier for individuals to register for a NIN. By increasing the number of enrollment centers, the commission hopes to reach more people and facilitate the registration process.

2. Public Awareness Campaigns: The NIMC will launch public awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians about the importance of having a NIN and the benefits it provides. These campaigns will aim to raise awareness about the NIN registration process and encourage more people to enroll.

3. Collaboration with Stakeholders: The NIMC will collaborate with various stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector organizations, and international partners, to support its efforts to increase NIN registrations. By working together with these stakeholders, the commission hopes to leverage their resources and expertise to achieve its enrollment targets.

4. Integration of NIN in Government Services: The NIMC will work towards integrating the NIN into various government services and initiatives, such as social welfare programs, healthcare services, and financial services. By making the NIN a requirement for accessing these services, the commission aims to incentivize more individuals to register for a NIN.

5. Improved Technology and Infrastructure: The NIMC will invest in upgrading its technology and infrastructure to support the increased demand for NIN registrations. This includes implementing new systems and processes to streamline the registration process and enhance the security of the national identity database.

By focusing on these five key areas, the NIMC hopes to significantly increase the number of individuals enrolled in the national identity database by the end of 2024. This will not only improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government services but also enhance the security and integrity of the national identity system in Nigeria.
