Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong expressed the team’s motivation to improve as the AFCON 2023 tournament progresses. After starting their campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea, the three-time AFCON winners went on to score a 1-0 win against hosts Côte d’Ivoire, a 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau, and a win against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. Since conceding against Equatorial Guinea, the team has kept three straight clean sheets.

The next challenge for the Eagles will be a match against Angola on Friday, 2 January. Looking ahead to the last-eight tie, Troost-Ekong emphasized the team’s motivation not to take any opponent for granted. He stated that the AFCON has taught them not to underestimate any team, regardless of their perceived size or reputation. He acknowledged that the upcoming game against Angola will be difficult, as they appear to be a very good team.

Despite the challenges, Troost-Ekong expressed the team’s eagerness to approach the match with the same winning mindset they have employed in previous games. He believes that the team has improved as the tournament has progressed, and they are looking forward to continuing this trend in the upcoming match against Angola.

This will be the first time the Eagles and Angola will meet in the AFCON, although they have previously faced each other in AFCON and World Cup qualifiers. Angola notably beat the Eagles to a World Cup qualifying ticket in 2006.

Troost-Ekong’s comments reflect the team’s determination and focus as they prepare to face Angola in the AFCON. They are not underestimating their opponents and are committed to approaching the match with the same winning mentality that has served them well in the tournament so far. The defender’s words also indicate an awareness of the challenges posed by Angola, highlighting the need for the team to remain focused and continue their improvement as the tournament progresses.

Overall, the Super Eagles are approaching their upcoming match with a combination of motivation, determination, and a willingness to learn and improve. Troost-Ekong’s remarks serve as a reminder of the team’s resilience and commitment to success in the AFCON 2023 tournament.
