The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Technical Study Group has unveiled the best XI from the group stage of the ongoing tournament, and there is no Super Eagles player on the list. The best XI was revealed in a 4-3-3 formation, with Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Jesus Owono named as the best goalkeeper at the group stage. Owono was awarded the Man of the Match title in his country’s 1-1 draw against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The best defenders in their respective positions were named as Achraf Hakimi and Nayef Aguerd of Morocco, Kalidou Koulibaly of Senegal, and Congo DR left-back Arthur Masuaku. The midfielders selected for the best XI are Lamine Camera of Senegal, Sofiat Amrabat, and Azzedine Ounahi of Morocco. The line-up is completed by the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, Emiliano Nsue of Equatorial Guinea, Ismail Saar of Senegal, and Gelson Dala of Angola.

As the tournament heads into the knockout stage, Nigeria is set to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The Nigeria v Cameroon match is scheduled to be played at 9 pm on StarTimes’ Sports Life and Sports Premium channels, which are dedicated channels for all AFCON 2023 matches.

It’s worth noting that none of the Super Eagles players made it to the best XI, indicating that there is room for improvement for the Nigerian team. As they face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the knockout stage, all eyes will be on the Super Eagles to see if they can make a significant impact and potentially change the narrative.
