Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd), the Head of Competitions and Management Committee of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), expressed optimism that the challenges faced by the federation can be overcome through positive synergy. Nesiama, who was recently appointed to his position, emphasized the importance of delivering on the tasks ahead, stating that it is their responsibility to ensure that athletes are able to compete at all times.

The tight schedule, which includes the submission of all entries for the Africa Games in Ghana by mid-February, presents a pressing and urgent situation for the AFN. Nesiama acknowledged that this will require the federation to adjust its programs to accommodate national trials within a short timeframe in order to involve all athletes. He also stressed the need for strong collaboration with the technical and other committees to achieve their goals.

Furthermore, Nesiama revealed that the AFN will kick off its first competition for the season in early February, followed by consistent events through March to provide athletes with adequate preparation. He also mentioned the increased number of competitions scheduled for this year compared to previous years, including the AFN Golden League and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In addition, Nesiama addressed the accommodation of foreign-based athletes in the Africa Games competitions, stating that it will be done without undue protocols. He assured that the federation will be dynamic and flexible in relaxing certain rules that may hinder athletes from attending trials anywhere in the world.

Nesiama outlined the terms of reference for the Competition and Management Committee, which include organizing and assessing competitions, appointing competition management and officiating officials, and ensuring the preparation of event calendars and competition content in line with best practices and athlete welfare.

In conclusion, Nesiama emphasized the importance of athlete preparation and warned against complacency. He stressed the need for strict adherence to discipline and rules within the federation. With his leadership and strategic planning, Nesiama aims to guide the AFN through a successful and eventful season.
