The political crisis in Rivers state took a new turn recently after Governor Fubara decided to make peace with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Adeleke Agbola, has disclosed that Fubara risks impeachment if he does not tread carefully. Agbola emphasized that Fubara is currently in a delicate position where he is the governor but does not have full control of the state as power has been taken from him.
This came after Fubara received back the 27 lawmakers who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) but are loyal to Wike and re-appointed commissioners who resigned during the Rivers crisis. Agbola believes that the tide might turn against Fubara after accepting Tinubu’s peace deal.
The fallout between Fubara and Wike led Agbola to suggest that the governor could be impeached due to the delicate political situation in the state. Wike, who is the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Fubara have been at loggerheads over the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state. The tension was addressed by Tinubu’s peace deal, but this has not completely resolved the political crisis in the state.
The legal practitioner highlighted that some lawmakers who defected to the APC have asked Fubara to represent the 2024 budget which was earlier presented to only four members of the assembly. Agbola urged the governor to apply caution to avoid impeachment, noting that Fubara is in a government with tied hands, implying that he is in power but not in full control.
In addition to these developments, Governor Fubara recently swore in nine re-nominated commissioners, who had earlier resigned, marking another twist in the political landscape of Rivers state. To this, President Tinubu has commended Governor Fubara for his statesmanship in resolving the impasse with Wike.
However, Wike criticized some elders of Rivers state for rejecting the outcome of Tinubu’s intervention, claiming that they are against him because some of their sons lost the general election. This further complicates the political situation in the state, putting Fubara’s position as governor at risk.
The delicate political dynamics in Rivers state present a precarious situation for Governor Fubara as he navigates through the complexities of state politics. The advice from Agbola to tread carefully and avoid impeachment underscores the fragility of Fubara’s position as governor amidst a strained political landscape.
