Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State is calling on the Federal Government to reconsider merging the Army University Biu in Borno with the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna. In addition, he is advocating for the National Centre for Agricultural Mechanization (NCAM) in Ilorin to remain independent rather than being absorbed as a department within the Ministry of Agriculture.
In an interview with the press in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of keeping the Army University Biu as a separate entity or transferring control to the Ministry of Education if the military is not interested in managing a university. He highlighted the university’s significant role in providing education to students in the North East region, particularly in Borno where the education sector has been severely impacted by years of insurgency.
Governor Zulum stressed the critical role that the Army University Biu plays in the educational development of Borno and the entire northeast region. He appealed to the President to address this issue and ensure that the university continues to operate effectively in serving the community.
Furthermore, Governor Zulum highlighted the essential function of the NCAM in fabricating agricultural tools and implements, which is crucial for promoting food security in Nigeria. He urged the government to recognize the unique mandate of NCAM and support its work in advancing agricultural mechanization in the country.
Governor Zulum expressed his hope that a technical committee would be established to review and reconsider the current proposals regarding the Army University Biu and NCAM. He emphasized the importance of preserving these institutions for the development of education and agriculture in Nigeria.
The Army University Biu was established in 2018 as a conventional university aimed at providing quality education to students in Borno State and the surrounding areas. Governor Zulum’s advocacy for the university’s autonomy reflects his commitment to ensuring access to education in regions affected by conflict and insecurity.
In conclusion, Governor Zulum’s appeals to the Federal Government to preserve the autonomy of the Army University Biu and NCAM underscore the significance of these institutions in fostering education and agricultural development in Nigeria. His proactive stance on these issues demonstrates his dedication to enhancing the capacity of academic and agricultural institutions to contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity.
