Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has taken a significant step in supporting education by approving the release of N1.3billion for the scholarship of 997 nursing and midwifery students from the state. This announcement was made by Mr. Zulum during the inauguration of the scholarship program at the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Maiduguri.

Out of the 1,080 nominees, 40 students from each of the 27 local government areas of the state were selected for the scholarship, totaling 997 beneficiaries. Governor Zulum also promised that these students would receive automatic employment upon graduation, showing a commitment to not only supporting their education but also ensuring their future career prospects.

The governor emphasized that this support aims to encourage the students to complete their studies and contribute to bridging the workforce demand in the healthcare system of the state. The allocated amount for the scholarship is N1,305,189,000, with N124,149,000 earmarked for tuition fees and the remaining N1,181,040,000 distributed as a monthly stipend of N30,000 to each beneficiary throughout their studies.

In addition to the scholarship program, Governor Zulum announced that N201 million would be set aside for bursary allowances to be given to 2,010 nursing and midwifery students who did not benefit from the scholarship. Each of these students will receive N100,000 as financial support to aid their education.

Furthermore, Governor Zulum highlighted the ongoing construction of two colleges of nursing, which are expected to be completed within the year. As a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to education, he inaugurated a lecture theater complex and a 3,000-capacity multipurpose hall at the College of Nursing and Midwifery.

The Commissioner for Education, Lawan Wakilbe, disclosed that the government had already approved over N6 billion for scholarships, with about N2.7 billion disbursed to students from Borno State studying in higher institutions across the country. This commitment to education and financial support for students reflects the government’s dedication to investing in the future of its young population.

The efforts made by Governor Zulum and the state government in promoting education and supporting students in the healthcare sector are commendable. By providing scholarships, employment opportunities, and financial assistance, they are not only empowering the youth but also contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in the healthcare industry. This initiative is a step towards building a brighter future for the people of Borno State and improving the overall educational landscape of the region.
