The Zamfara House of Assembly made a significant decision on Monday by suspending eight lawmakers for various allegations including misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, and illegal sitting. This action was announced by the Speaker of the House, Bilyaminu Moriki, during the Assembly’s plenary in Gusau.
The suspension was a result of a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Bello Mazawaje (PDP-Tsafe East), citing the violation of the Assembly’s Order 10, Rule 9 by the suspended members. Mr. Mazawaje explained that the lawmakers had forcefully entered the office of the Clerk and Sargent at Arms of the Assembly, causing damage to property and conducting an unauthorized sitting. They also prevented other members from entering the chamber, leading to chaos and disruption of normal proceedings.
In response, Mr. Mazawaje proposed the suspension of the eight members for alleged contempt of the house, conspiracy, conducting illegal sitting, mischief, and misconduct. The Deputy Speaker of the House, Adamu Aliyu (PDP-Gummi 2), expressed disappointment in the behavior of the suspended lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of upholding law and order within the legislative process. He supported the motion for disciplinary action to be taken against the offenders.
The Chief Whip of the House, Rilwanu Marafa (PDP-Anka constituency), condemned the actions of the lawmakers involved in the illegal sitting, labeling it as a disgrace to the Assembly. He urged his colleagues to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address such misconduct in the future. On the other hand, the Minority Whip, Nura Dahiru (APC-Birnin Magaji Constituency), called for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice and fairness in handling the situation.
The suspended lawmakers were identified as Bashir Aliyu (PDP-Gummi 1), Amiru Keta (PDP-Tsafe West), Nasiru Abdullahi (PDP-Maru South), Bashir Masama (PDP-Bukkuyum North), Faruku Dosara (APC-Maradun 1), Ibrahim Tukur (APC-Bakura Constituency), Shamsudeen Hassan (APC Talata-Mafara North), and Bashiru Sarkin-Zango (PDP-Bungudu West). Their suspension serves as a reminder of the standards of conduct expected from members of the Assembly to maintain professionalism and respect for the institution.
Ultimately, the decision to suspend the lawmakers was a necessary step to uphold the integrity and dignity of the Zamfara House of Assembly. It sends a clear message that any form of misconduct or illegal activity will not be tolerated within the legislative body. The move towards accountability and disciplinary action sets a precedent for future behavior and serves to maintain order and decorum in the state’s legislative processes.
