The Young Progressives Party, YPP in Akwa Ibom State made the decision to merge its structure into the All Progressives Congress, APC. This move was announced during the reception of the YPP governorship candidate for the 2023 elections, Senator Bassey Akpan, and his supporters in Ukana Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, described the exercise as ‘uncommon’ as it was done when the election was not even in sight.
Akpabio also received the delegation of the leadership and stakeholders of the YPP led by the State Chairman, Pastor Nyeneime Andy, and commended the YPP family in the state for recognizing the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in repositioning and transforming the country for the better, even when they were with the opposition.
Senator Akpan stated that his decision to collapse his party structure into the APC was not driven by any intention to contest the 2027 election. He emphasized the YPP’s complete submission to the leadership of the APC and the support for delivering Akwa Ibom to the party. He also expressed optimism about the APC’s chances of taking over power in Akwa Ibom in 2027.
Akparawa Ephraim Inyang-eyen, the former Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District candidate for the YPP, described the senate president as the authentic leader of Akwa Ibom State. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for giving the South-South region another chance at the senate presidency.
The action taken by the YPP family was seen as a call of destiny that required necessary adjustments for the growth of the state and the development of the country at large. The support for President Tinubu’s efforts in repositioning and transforming Nigeria was reiterated, even by the opposition parties.
Overall, the merger of the YPP structure into the APC was seen as a significant step towards promoting unity in Akwa Ibom State and strengthening the APC’s presence in the region.
