The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently addressed the deteriorating electricity supply situation in the country. In a statement released by his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to discuss the issue and emphasize the need for improved performance.
Adelabu emphasized that wilful non-performance by any Distribution Company (DISCO) could result in severe punishment or even licence revocation. He expressed concern over some distribution companies deliberately not taking up power supply from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and highlighted instances of power lines being damaged by vandals in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
The Minister stated that despite challenges such as gas shortages, the Ministry has been pressuring Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance their performance. This pressure has led to an increase in power generation to over 4000 MW in recent days, showing some improvement in the overall power supply situation.
Adelabu also mentioned plans to meet with the DISCOs and TCN to address the worsening power supply in their respective regions and find lasting solutions to the issues at hand. He stressed the importance of all DISCOs performing up to expectations and warned that any wilful non-performance could lead to serious consequences, including licence revocation.
Furthermore, Adelabu directed TCN to begin repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions. He had previously visited various power generating plants in different states to assess their operations and infrastructure, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the power sector.
During these visits, Adelabu assured the power plants of plans to settle outstanding debts owed to them by the government and gas supply companies. This initiative aims to enhance generation levels across the country and provide relief to electricity consumers nationwide.
In conclusion, the Minister urged patience from consumers as efforts are made to turn around the electricity supply situation. His actions and directives demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing the challenges in the power sector and ensuring a more reliable and stable electricity supply for all Nigerians.
