Former members of the Rivers State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council in the 2023 elections have caused a stir by announcing their endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the presidency. Along with this endorsement, they have also expressed full support for Siminilayi Fubara as the PDP leader in Rivers State. However, they made it clear that they oppose President Tinubu’s appointment of Nyesome Wike as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The announcement was made by former Transport Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader in Rivers state, Abiye Sekibo, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt. Sekibo was joined by prominent figures like former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, former governorship aspirant Celestine Omehia, and ex-lawmaker Austin Opara, in expressing their solidarity with President Tinubu’s agenda and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The group voiced their dissatisfaction with the state’s current political developments and urged President Tinubu to advise former governor Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). They emphasized that the elections had concluded and the Supreme Court had made a definitive decision, declaring Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the legitimately elected President of Nigeria.
In their statement, they urged all their supporters to give total support and unalloyed loyalty to the Governor of Rivers State and President Tinubu. They also backed Governor Fubara, stating that he was democratically elected as Governor of Rivers State and affirmed by the Supreme Court. The group expressed their call for unalloyed loyalty and support for the governor of Rivers state and the President.
The group also addressed the current feud between Governor Fubara and former Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike. They alleged that Wike insulted former Governor Dr. Peter Odili and his wife for not supporting his unsuccessful bid to impeach the duly elected Governor of Rivers State. However, they clarified that they had no objections to the President appointing Wike as the FCT Minister but felt obligated to inform the President about certain aspects of Wike’s character and actions.
Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has made it clear that he cannot be ousted from his position before his term concludes. He emphasized that his election in 2023 was backed by popular support, giving him the right to serve out his tenure without interference. Fubara further reassured the state’s residents of his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties.
The endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the presidency by former members of the PDP in Rivers State has caused a significant upheaval in the political landscape of the state. This move has sparked discussions and debates among political stakeholders and residents alike. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this endorsement will impact the upcoming political developments in Rivers State.
