The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barrister Nyesome Wike, has articulated that security and job creation for the residents are at the forefront of his agenda in the territory. This statement was made during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, who paid him a visit in his office in Abuja on Tuesday. Wike emphasized the long-standing relationship between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, which has been strong since the colonial period up to Independence.
In response to Montgomery’s request for an outline of the administration’s priority areas, Wike highlighted his focus on President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This agenda is built on eight key priorities including food security, poverty eradication, economic growth and job creation, access to capital, improving the business environment, upholding the rule of law, and combating corruption. While Wike acknowledged that these issues are not entirely resolved, significant progress has been made in addressing them.
The Minister noted that security in Abuja faces unique challenges due to its proximity to states like Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Kaduna, which have high levels of banditry. Criminal elements often cross into Abuja to evade law enforcement in neighboring states. However, Wike highlighted the success in reducing criminal activities in Abuja through increased support and commitment from security agencies, particularly the police. He commended the progress made in combating banditry and kidnapping in the region.
Wike also pointed out the increase in construction activities in Abuja, transforming the city into a bustling construction site and creating job opportunities for the local youth. He highlighted the importance of not only white-collar jobs but also involving youths in various job opportunities across the area councils.
During the meeting, British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery expressed his interest in understanding the development initiatives in the Federal Capital Territory. He acknowledged the security challenges, particularly kidnapping, and sought updates on the issue. Montgomery also mentioned the recent engagements between the UK and Nigeria in security and defense partnerships, as well as efforts to improve the business environment.
The visit by the British High Commissioner underscores the importance of cooperation between the UK and Nigeria in addressing key priorities for the prosperity of FCT. The discussions and collaborations between the two countries aim to enhance bilateral relationships and contribute to the economic growth and security of the Federal Capital Territory.
