The political drama in Rivers state between Governor Sim Fubara and FCT minister Nyesom Wike has taken a new turn with the resignation of the councilor representing Wike’s ward in the Obio/Akpor legislative council. Achor Nna has decided to leave Wike’s camp and declare his support for Governor Fubara, citing his readiness to work towards the liberation of Rivers state and his commitment to speaking the truth, even if it means risking his life.
Nna, who served as the leader of the Obio/Akpor legislature and councilor representing Ward 9 Rumu-Epirikom and Elioparanwa in the legislative council, submitted his resignation letter on March 7. In the letter addressed to the council chairperson, Nna expressed his gratitude to Wike for the opportunity to represent him in the legislative council but stated his decision to align with Governor Fubara in order to “liberate” the state.
In a live video on Facebook confirming his resignation, Nna highlighted the reasons for his decision, including intimidation, marginalisation, coercion, bullying, and arm-twisting from leaders in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. He emphasized his commitment to aligning with the truth amidst the current political issues in Rivers state, referencing a popular saying by former Kogi State senator Dino Melaye: “If you say the truth, you die. If you lie, you die. Better to say the truth and die.”
The feud between Fubara and Wike over governance and politics in Rivers state has been ongoing, with a majority of the Rivers house of assembly members loyal to Wike. In an effort to resolve the political crisis, President Bola Tinubu facilitated a controversial peace deal between Fubara and Wike.
Fubara, in a recent interview, recounted the challenges he faced during an impeachment saga, mentioning that if he had used all his powers as governor, it would have led to a total crisis in Rivers state. He expressed his concern for the welfare of the state’s residents, stating that losing his seat was not his primary worry.
As the political landscape in Rivers state continues to evolve, the resignation of Nna and his declaration of support for Governor Fubara adds a new dimension to the ongoing power struggle between Fubara and Wike. The dynamics of this political rivalry will undoubtedly shape the future of governance in Rivers state and have far-reaching implications for the state’s residents.
