PROVOST of the Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Mrs. Gbonjubola Owolabi, has emphasized the importance of the sale of forms for the basic midwifery training program in order to address Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate by producing more skilled birth attendants. She stated that the college’s decision to sell forms and not admit through JAMB for the program is part of its commitment to training a competent health workforce for the country’s healthcare sector.
Mrs. Owolabi explained that interested candidates can purchase forms for the three-year course which is set to commence this month. The examination for the intake of candidates will take place in about two weeks, and although the form will only be available for a short period of time, the college aims to ensure that all interested individuals in Nigeria have the opportunity to benefit from the program.
The primary goal of the initiative is to contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality in Nigeria by enhancing the skills of birth attendants. The program will admit only 100 qualified individuals, including males. Mrs. Owolabi noted that the college has been accepting male candidates for midwifery training for over 10 years, highlighting the inclusivity of the program.
She emphasized that the program presents a valuable opportunity for individuals who are passionate about nursing to take a significant step towards realizing their career aspirations. The application process is conducted online through the college’s website, and candidates are advised not to make any payments through individual agents or personal bank accounts outside of the school’s official website.
In light of the program’s significance in addressing maternal mortality and enhancing the healthcare workforce in Nigeria, Mrs. Owolabi urged interested candidates to adhere to the specified guidelines for application and payment to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
The sale of forms for the basic midwifery training program at the Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery aligns with the institution’s overarching objective of contributing to the improvement of maternal healthcare in Nigeria. By equipping more individuals with the necessary skills to provide quality care during childbirth, the college aims to make a tangible impact on the country’s maternal mortality rate.
As the program prepares to admit a new cohort of students, Mrs. Owolabi’s call for interested candidates to take advantage of this opportunity underscores the urgency and importance of training skilled birth attendants to support Nigeria’s healthcare system effectively. Through strategic initiatives such as this, the college continues to play a vital role in addressing critical healthcare challenges and strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
