Malam Garba Shehu, a former President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, emphasized the importance of supporting democracy in Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Shehu stated that democracy is the only viable system of government for the country and urged Nigerians to continue to uphold it.

Speaking at the Punch Nigeria Ltd 50th Anniversary Lecture titled “Recovering the Narrative” at Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Shehu commended the private media for their contributions to the nation. He highlighted the significance of Punch newspaper in diversifying newspaper publishing in Nigeria and reviving the private press. Shehu expressed his hope for the continued success and growth of the private press in the country.

Shehu also advised Nigerian journalists to expand their skills and knowledge to adapt to the current challenges in the profession and the nation. He encouraged them to learn editing, photography, videography, and other essential skills to enhance their employability and usefulness in the industry.

In a similar vein, Lovette Idisi, a former House of Representatives member, acknowledged the multi-faceted problems facing the country. However, he commended the present administration for its commitment to achieving prosperity for the nation and its people. Idisi urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive of the government’s efforts to implement reforms for national development.

Reflecting on the impact of the Punch newspaper in promoting the vision and aspirations of Delta state, Idisi praised the publication for its contributions over the past 50 years. He encouraged the newspaper to continue its valuable work and emphasized the importance of freedom of speech and expression in deepening democracy in the country.

The 50th Anniversary Lecture, in memory of Chief James Aboderin, the founding Chairman of Punch Nigeria Ltd, featured a keynote address titled “Recovering the Narrative” delivered by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka. The event brought together media executives, industry leaders, academics, and security chiefs to celebrate the milestone and discuss the importance of journalism in shaping national discourse.

In conclusion, the call to support democracy, uphold freedom of expression, and empower journalists to excel in their profession resonates throughout the testimonies of Malam Garba Shehu, Lovette Idisi, and other speakers at the Punch Nigeria Ltd 50th Anniversary Lecture. As Nigeria continues on its path towards progress and development, the role of a free and vibrant media remains vital in shaping public opinion, promoting accountability, and fostering a truly democratic society.
