The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, recently highlighted his administration’s focus on security, agriculture, and job creation in the territory. This strategic approach was revealed during a meeting with a delegation from the British High Commission led by the British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the FCT Administration’s development agenda and strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK.
One of the key areas of emphasis for Mr. Wike is job creation, particularly within the agricultural sector. Recognizing the vast arable lands in the FCT, the minister expressed his willingness to collaborate with agricultural investors to create employment opportunities for the youth and ensure food security in the region. He also mentioned the ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja’s city center and Area Councils, which are not only contributing to development but also providing avenues for youth employment.
Mr. Wike reiterated the importance of job creation as a top priority for his administration, emphasizing that it is crucial for the well-being of the youth in the FCT. He pointed out that the various activities and projects being carried out in the Area Councils have led to the creation of numerous job opportunities for the youth. Additionally, the minister welcomed investments in the tourism sector to position the FCT as a premier tourist destination and further enhance job creation in the region.
In his discussion about security challenges in the territory, Mr. Wike credited the significant improvements to the support and commitment of security agencies. Despite some challenges posed by criminal activities in neighboring states, he expressed confidence in the agencies’ efforts to address these threats and enhance investors’ confidence in the FCT. The minister acknowledged that while all problems have not been completely solved, progress has been made, particularly in improving security in the region.
During the meeting, Mr. Montgomery from the British High Commission echoed the importance of agricultural development and job creation, highlighting ongoing programs aimed at enhancing value chains for farmers. He commended Nigeria’s economic reforms and expressed optimism about the positive impact these reforms would have on long-term prosperity and growth in the country. The British High Commissioner also mentioned a specific agriculture program focused on improving value chains to facilitate the sale of agricultural produce and promote trade within the sector.
Overall, the meeting between the FCT Administration and the British High Commission emphasized the shared commitment to job creation, agricultural development, and security in the Federal Capital Territory. Both parties discussed the potential for partnerships and investments to further these goals and strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UK. The minister’s dedication to addressing these key issues underscores his administration’s focus on promoting sustainable development and economic growth in the FCT.
